Back on Track – It feels so good to be able to sit and type out my verses this week. I know there is no one holding my feet to the fire, so to speak, and that it probably isn’t a huge letdown for any of you if I neglect my memorization from time to time… but can I just tell you how happy it makes my heart when I follow through and LEARN them?

I suppose it’s because it’s a promise I’ve made not so much to anyone else, or even myself, as to the Lord. I’m amazed at what He has accomplished in my life through this journey of memorization, and in awe of the way He has enabled my brain to remember all of these precious words, which are life to me.

Here’s something else I love… more and more often, I will run across a verse somewhere – whether it’s on a website, or one the kids are working on, or something a friend posts on her blog — and the words will jump off the page at me. Because they escape my lips multiple times each week, these verses have become like old familiar friends to me…. and I smile when I bump into them through the week just as you would someone who has become part of you. I don’t know that I’ve ever felt that way about scripture before. Maybe I’ve just never thought of it like that. I don’t know. Do you have passages that you feel that way about? Or am I just weird? (I’m entirely aware of that possibility!)

I’m also excited that Jonalie has joined me in this. She’s been memorizing from 2 Timothy, and doing a great job! If you see her post in the comments section, please be sure to send some encouragement her way… and Jonalie, I thank you! It’s so much more fun comparing notes with you than it would be if I were to just work on my own.

Ok… I’m going to start with verse 65, which is the 9th stanza for anyone counting… and I am, but only as a tribute to the Lord’s faithfulness to push me on in this.

You have dealt well with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word. Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe Your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word. You are good and do good; teach me Your statutes.

The proud have forged a lie against me, but I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart. Their heart is as fat as grease, but I delight in Your law. It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver.

Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments. Those who fear You will be glad when they see me, for I have hoped in Your word. I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right, and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me. Let, I pray, Your merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to Your word to Your servant. (Psalm 119:65-76)

The most powerful statement in this weeks section (that last bit) is this: “I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right, that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.” Memorizing this Psalm has really cemented for me the idea of faithful affliction. So often we blame all of our issues on the devil, don’t we? Yet often, the trials we experience are not just allowed by God, but they are ordained by Him… they are meant to teach us something (whether about ourselves, or about our Lord), or to grow us and make us look more like Christ, and sometimes *gasp* they are the result of our own poor choices, and our loving Father is allowing us to live out the consequences.

Think of a parent who exercises no discipline over his son. He gives them whatever they want, and ends up with a spoiled brat. When the child makes a mess, daddy rushes in to clean it up and make it seem as though it never happened. What kind of adult is that child going to become? No. A loving father knows how to lovingly guide his boy (or girl) and uses all kinds of methods to teach them responsibility, concern for others, actions and consequences, and a whole host of other things that will be necessary for life. Sometimes it involves a lecture (ever been to the spiritual woodshed?). Sometimes it means getting put in a time-out for a bit. Sometimes it means living out the very serious results of our own foolish behaviors. Sometimes it means affliction.

With each passing day, I am more and more grateful for the affliction. I love that He loves me enough to discipline me… and that He loves me enough to embrace me and smooth His holy fingers across my tear-stained cheeks when the lessons are learned and I return to Him, repentant and sorrowful over my sin. And that His merciful kindness is my comfort… always.

So the title is not nice and alliterated, but time got away from me this week. Is everyone crazy busy the week before Easter or is it just me?

Without further ado, here are my verses. I’ll begin with verse 57 again…

You are my portion, Oh Lord; I have said that I would keep Your word. I have entreated Your favor with my whole heart; Be merciful to me according to Your word. I thought about my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made haste and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

The cords of the wicked have bound me, but I have not forgotten Your law. At midnight I will rise and give thanks to You because of Your righteous judgments. I am a companion of all who fear You, and of those who keep Your precepts. The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy. Teach me Your statutes.

You have dealt well with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word. Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe Your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your law. You are good and do good; teach me Your statutes.

Their heart is as fat as grease, but I delight in Your law. It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. The law of Your mouth is better to me than many coins of gold and silver.

And here are the verses I’ll work on for this week (73-76). They begin a new stanza.

<sup>73</sup> Your hands have made me and fashioned me;
Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
74 Those who fear You will be glad when they see me,
Because I have hoped in Your word.
75 I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
76 Let, I pray, Your merciful kindness be for my comfort,
According to Your word to Your servant.

What a beautiful prayer for the week! What are you learning?

Beginning with verse 57…

And here are the verses I’ll work on for this week (69-72)

69 The proud have forged a lie against me,
But I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as grease,
But I delight in Your law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 The law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.

Happy Memorizing!

Confession Time.. I did NOT learn my verses for this week. I generally work on them in the car and for one reason or another, I didn’t get them onto the ring with my memory work, so it didn’t happen. I’ll work on the same verses again for next week.

This has been one of those weeks, I guess. Joel and I began The Maker’s Diet last Monday, and it’s been a challenge! I’m loving it, but at the same time, it takes a lot more thought and preparation than just eating whatever’s in front of me. I’m trusting that once we get used to it, it will become easier. I hope so anyway.

I’m learning so much. Sometimes it feels as though my mind is on information overload. I’m soaking it all up like a sponge, and I can only pray that as needed, I’ll be able to squeeze and have the knowledge flow to the surface and be wrung out as I need it.

For the first time in a long time, I’m committed. Not to the Lord… thankfully that hasn’t waned over the past year… but committed to treating this temple He’s given me with more respect. I’ve been pushing aside promptings to gain some self-control. I would begin to exercise restraint in regards to my eating habits, and then would give up. I had every excuse in the book, but the bottom line is that I just didn’t want to change. I think a huge part of the problem is that the promises I kept making were to myself, and not to the Lord.

At this point, I’ve covenanted with HIM to take better care of this earthly shell He’s given me. If I break my promise now, I’m not just letting myself down — I’m letting the Lord down. Adonai. My Master. It gives the journey so much more significance and importance.

It should have been my attitude all along.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all as unto the Lord, giving thanks to the God the Father through Him.” Col. 3:17

I’m all for living well. How about you?

I’m going to start with the 5th stanza, because that seems to be where my memory begins to lose it…

Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law. Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me walk the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incine my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things and revive me in Your way. Establish Your word to Your servant who is devoted to fearing You. Turn away my reproach, which I dread, for Your judgments are good. Behold I long for Your precepts. Revive me in Your righteousness.

Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord, Your salvation according to Your word. So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust in Your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for I have hoped in Your ordinances. So shall I keep Your law continually, forever and ever.

(insert brain freeze right here – I always have a hard time getting from here to the next verse for some reason)

And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. I shall speak of Your testimonies also before kings and will not be ashamed. And I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. My hands also shall I lift up to Your commandments, which I love, and will meditate on Your statutes.

(also struggle getting from there to HERE: )

Remember Your word to Your servant upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life. The proud have me in great derision, yet I do not turn aside from Your law. I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord, and have comforted myself.

Indignation has taken hold of me, because of the wicked who forsake Your law. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I remember Your name in the night, O Lord, and I keep Your law. This has become mine, because I have kept Your precepts.

You are my portion, O Lord. I have said that I would keep Your word. I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; be merciful to me according to Your Word. I thought about my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made haste and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

(Psalm 119:33-60)

For whatever reason, there’s one line in particular above that I have a hard time remembering… “This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.” I was thinking today that maybe the reason it’s so hard for me to remember is that I don’t really understand it. So I decided to look a bit deeper this afternoon.

I guess the big question for me is what does “this” refer to? What has become mine as a result of keeping His precepts?

There seem to be two schools of thought. The first says this “this” refers back to the verses prior… that it means comfort in affliction, life, the ability to sing songs of worship, the knack for remembering the name of the Lord when times get dark. I love that, don’t you? By keeping His Word, we can experience all of that and more!

Matthew Henry has kind of been my “go-to” guy with this particular Psalm. He agrees with the above, but adds a bit more stating, “Note, God’s work is its own wages. A heart to obey the will of God is a most valuable reward of obedience; and the more we do the more we may do, and shall do, in the service of God; the branch that bears fruit is made more fruitful, Jn. 15:2. 8. ” Love that too.

In keeping His precepts is found great delight. I know it to be true from my own experience. When the Lord lays out a guideline, I can trust that He has done it for a purpose… and that He has my best in mind.

Ok… I just had to smile. I started “The Maker’s Diet” today and while I can’t follow it exactly (who can afford to buy all organic food?), I’m incorporating as much of it as is possible into my life. And it just makes SENSE. When God directed the Israelites to eat certain foods and stay away from others, He wasn’t just trying to be restrictive or test them to see if they would obey. He had specific reasons for setting out the boundaries that He did. He still does… not just for eating, but for everything else in life as well.

Is there a line that He’s asking you not to cross today? A situation in which He has spelled out some specific rules for you, or pointed you to a verse that gives instruction or a warning? Listen to Him!

And then you can say with the Psalmist, “This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.”

Here’s what has become mine…

“After these things, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” (Gen. 15:1)

He Himself is my exceedingly great reward. Though my faithless heart is prone to desire other things from time to time… He is all I need. My exceedingly great reward!

Here are my verses for next week:

“The cords of the wicked have bound me, but I have not forgotten Your law. At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your righteous judgments. I am a companion of all who fear You, and of those who keep Your precepts. The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; Teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:61-64)

I hope that part about the wicked having me bound isn’t prophetic for me!

What are you memorizing? How is God using it in your life?

A while back, I wrote a post about the story of the Prodigal. I mentioned then that there were more things that the Lord had placed on my heart that would wait for another day. I guess that’s today.

The story is found in Luke 15. I shared with you that I have been both of the sons this passage speaks of. I’ve been the Prodigal, but I’ve also been the judgmental older brother who couldn’t get past his own pride and self-centeredness to join in the celebration. That was an emotional post for me… one steeped in personal application — but aren’t they the best?

I love so much about this parable. I love that the father loves the younger son back into the fold, not because he has earned that position, but simply because of grace. The father loves BOTH sons, whether they have served him or not. God loves me no more or less now that I am serving Him, than He did during those reckless years when I lived in “asotia“. It frees me from the guilt of the past, and keeps me humble regarding the life I live in the present.

“Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard the music and the dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received himsafe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’

“But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’

“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’” (Luke 15:25-32)

I talked quite a bit about the older son before, but recently picked up on this… Notice how the older brother refers to the younger? “As soon as this son of yours came…” And the father’s gentle reply, “for your brother was dead, and is alive again…”

I chuckled a bit at this, remembering all the times I have jokingly told Joel, “YOUR son” did such and such… but in this case, it isn’t a joke. It’s sad. The older son doesn’t even want to lay claim to his brother. And yet the father provides a gentle reminder… “Your brother.” I love that.

I remember hearing a sermon preached on this passage once and I learned something that I found fascinating. When the son “came to himself” and returned to his father, the father bestowed gifts on the son: a robe, a ring, and sandals for his feet. Here’s the significance…

1. “The Best Robe” – This was a sign of dignity and honor. I’m reminded of Joseph and his coat of many colors (Genesis 37:3) and his being clothed in fine linen by Pharoah (Gen. 41:42). Tamar was also given a robe of many colors, as was fitting for the daughter of a King (2 Samuel 13:18).

My Father has given me dignity and honor by clothing me in a robe of righteousness.

“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments.” (Isaiah 61:10)

2. “A Ring” – The ring signifies authority. In Genesis 41:42, Joseph was given a ring, denoting the fact that he was second in command only to Pharoah.

Jesus has given believers authority, and one day we will reign with Him:

“And they sang a new song, saying, ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, adn to open its seals; For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your Blood out of every tribe and tongue and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.” (Rev. 5:9-10)

3. “Sandals” – Slaves didn’t wear shoes. The sandals indicated that the son was not a hired hand, but was a free man.

My sweet friends… we are FREE!

“No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his Master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15)

And this treasure from John 8:34:

“Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Can I get a hallelujah? HALLELUJAH!

Luke 15 is known as the Chaper of Lost Things. The lost sheep… the lost coin…. the lost son. I am so grateful that this chapter is etched in the pages of Scripture. I was SO lost… yet Jesus is the Finder of Lost Things.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Matthew 18:11)

Thank You, Jesus!

***********************************************

Here are my verses for next week’s Memory Monday challenge:

“You are my portion, O LORD; I have said that I would keep Your words. I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; Be merciful to me according to Your word. I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made hast and did not dely to keep Your commandments.” (Psalm 119:57-60)

***************************************

I had asked you to pray for my bff Lisa’s Dad recently. Thank you for your intercession. Walter went home to be with Jesus early Sunday morning. His passing from this life to the next was extremely peaceful. Please continue to pray for his family. Thank you.

I’m going to start with the sixth stanza…

“Let Your mercies come also to me, O LORD, Your salvation according to Your Word. So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust in Your Word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for I have hoped in Your ordinances. So shall I keep Your law continually, forever and ever.”

And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. I will speak of Your testimonies also to kings, and will not be ashamed. And I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes.

Remember Your Word to Your servant upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your Word has given me life. The proud have me in great derision, yet I do not turn aside from Your law. I remember Your judgments of old, O LORD, and have comforted myself.

Indignation has taken hold of me, because of the wicked who forsake Your law. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I remember Your name in the night, O LORD, and I keep Your law. This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.

I want to take this week to really review all that I’ve learned so far… so rather than tackle the next stanza, I’m going to hold off and work on taking what I’ve already memorized and making it part of me.

Have a great week in the Word! What are you memorizing?

To be sure I don’t forget the verses I learned a couple of months ago, today I’m going to post all I’ve learned so far… the ones for this week will be the last four.

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, those who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity, they walk in His ways.

You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently. Oh that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes. Then I would not be ashamed when I look into all Your commandments. I will praise You with uprightness of heart when I learn Your righteous judgements. I will keep Your statutes; do not forsake me utterly!

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word. With my whole heart I have sought You; let me not wander from Your commandments. Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O LORD, teach me Your statutes!

With my lips I have declared all the judgments of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies as much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts and contemplate Your ways. I will also delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your Word.

Deal bountifully with Your servant that I may live and keep Your Word. Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things from Your law. I am a stranger to the earth, do not hide Your commandments from me. My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments at all times.

You rebuke the proud — the cursed, who stray from Your commandments. Remove from me reproach and contempt, for I have kept Your testimonies. Princes also sit and speak against me, but Your servant meditates on Your statutes. Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.

My soul clings to the dust, revive me according to Your Word. I have declared my ways and You answered me. Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so shall I meditate on Your wonderful works. My soul melts from heaviness; strengthen me according to Your Word.

Remove from me the way of lying, and grant me Your law graciously. I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me. I cling to Your testimonies. Oh LORD, do not put me to shame. I will run the course of Your commandments, for You shall enlarge my heart.

Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding and I shall keep Your law; indeed I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things and revive me in Your way. Establish Your Word to Your servant who is devoted to fearing You. Turn away my reproach, which I dread, for Your judgments are good. Behold, I long for Your precepts; revive me in Your righteousness.

Let Your mercies come also to me; Your salvation according to Your Word. So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust in Your Word. And take not the Word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for I have hoped in Your ordinances. So shall I keep Your law continually, forever and ever.

And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. I will speak also of Your testimonies before kings, and will not be ashamed. I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, which I love, and will meditate on Your statutes.

Remember Your Word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your Word has given me life. The proud have me in great derision, yet I do not stray from Your commandments. I remembered Your judgments of old, O LORD, and have comforted myself.

Ok… you can see that the last four were a little shaky, and not word for word. I’ll keep working on them this week. All in all, I’m up to 52 verses. As I typed all of these out today, I was amazed at the memories of how the Lord used each in my life. The section about “princes also sit and speak against me” was memorized in a week when Satan was sitting in the seat of accuser and I was tempted to lash back and defend myself… but I remembered the second part of that verse and instead meditated on the Lord and His Word… and let HIM be my Rock and my Defender. And now… months later, one of the songs on the “Patriarchs” music CD is speaking to my soul in a powerful way (thank you, Travis Cottrell and David Moffitt!)…

God Almight, El Shaddai
El Elyon, Lord God Most High
You have been my Rock and my Defender!
All I have, I lay it down
Before the throne of Your renown
Let everything I am be found surrendered.
King of my heart
King of my days
For all You are
You are forevermore
God of my praise!

And of course it’s no coincidence that the same week I was memorizing the verses about turning away from looking at worthless things, Tim was filling in for Jeff and delivering a sermon on idolatry.

Here are my verses for next week — v. 53-56:

“Indignation has taken hold of me because of the wicked who forsake Your law. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I remember Your name in the night, O LORD, adn I keep Your law. This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.”

What are you memorizing? How is God using it in Your life?
